City tourism industry rebrands to Discover Saskatoon, partners with Tribal Council

Big news in our city: Tourism Saskatoon has rebranded as Discover Saskatoon! And while it might sound extravagant to celebrate a new 8 letters with dignitaries on hand, what’s going on is so much more than a word change.

Saskatoon's marketing organization is responsible for attracting tourists, sure. Did you know that pre-pandemic, Saskatoon was number 18 on the New York Times’ list of places to visit in the world? I enjoy a lot of Canadian cities but, we were the only one to make that list. 😉 Our culinary scene has been internationally recognized time and time again. These kinds of placements wouldn't just happen without the encouragement of our tourism organization in getting international journalists' boots on our ground.

And yes, they attract major events and use their local partnerships to make ideas possible. Like when the FIBA 3X3 basketball Masters saw stands plucked from SaskTel Centre and filled with fans in downtown Saskatoon. Very cool. Not to mention, they trumpet our local festivals and amenities to visitors.

But the organization is equally tasked with uplifting business and events so that our own community will take advantage of the opportunities at home. It’s saying that everyone, local or visitor, has something to discover in Saskatoon. It’s an idea that invites tourism revenue while also keeping our dollars spent at home. It’s a recipe for a strong economy. And a strong community.

Another reason? The new partnership agreement with the Saskatoon Tribal Counci!— a historic move that will put Truth and Reconciliation into action within our community. The agreement pledges access to jobs and economic development through tourism and to share our city’s rich Indigenous culture on the world stage. (Photos above by Sik Pics.)

The bridging of cultures is a theme that runs through this rebranding and every move has been led by conversations with community. Discover Saskatoon's word stamp, designed by Rock & Bloom, has the Cree syllabics for "discover", done with the permission of the Saskatoon Tribal Council through the new partnership. the logo was created by Indigenous- Filipino designer Christine Marie of Awasis Boutique, each part of the circle meaningful & clear.

I’m honored to have witnessed the unveiling of this rebrand & to live and champion the directive of the new name. I hope you also feel called to Discover Saskatoon!
